~ A Flood of Historic Proportions ~

The Southeast Minnesota / Southwest Wisconsin Flood of 2007

This is the county road in front of our property. To the left was a pasture for our neighbor's horses. Day Creek filled up the entire pasture and flowed across the county road. Photo courtesy of T. Rauk.

I am going to keep this somewhat short, but wanted to be sure to let everyone know that our house is still standing and everything is okay (relatively).

Last night, over 12 inches of rain fell in parts of Houston County, Minnesota with some areas receiving 15 inches in a 24-hour period. Most of the rain fell at a rate of about 2 inches per hour. Combine that with a lot of hills and bluffs and you have a recipe for a disaster of epic proportions.

First, about our place. Day Creek turned into a river -- that is not an understatement. Water from the Day Creek raced across our front driveway carrying trees and other debris' with it. Our front driveway will have to be rebuilt. Mudslides cover our road in four places. The water in the pasture got so high that it flowed across our county road.

Our neighbor's horses (which I feared might have been carried off by the waters) were found huddled together in the back pasture. One of the horses was completely covered in mud. A makeshift coral is being built by our neighbors up on higher ground.

Phone service is out and I doubt it will be back soon. To get to La Crescent, we usually have many different ways to get there--right now there is only one option available. Roads have literally been washed away, same goes for rail-lines. It will take MONTHS for things to return to normal.

Here's a few things I have learned today / this evening:

* The mayor of Houston, MN has ordered a mandatory evacuation of the town. Fears are the levee may give soon on the Root River.

* 1 mile from our house, a home had there driveway cut in two by running waters and left a trench 12-feet deep.

* Our county road is washed out to the east of us.

* A house near Brownsville slid down a hill across the highway and landed on the railroad tracks.

* Six confirmed deaths in the area, with others still missing.

* Many people with injuries.

* Hokah is out of power and because of mudslides the power company can't get to the poles to restore power.

* Part of Rushford is under 4 to 5 feet of water. (Levee broke.) Kwik-Trip has water up to its roof line.

* The Root River continues to rise and is already three feet above flood stage.

* Tim Pawlenty (governor of Minnesota) has surveyed the damage and declared six counties disaster areas.

More to be reported whenever I can get a chance to find an Internet connection. I am amazed at how little press this has gotten on national news.
