Hi Bruce and Nancy,
So far the results have been mixed. (No pun intended.) I need to do more work to slow down the set-up time without compromising the strength of the mortar.
Plus, there has been a lot of negative press (60 minutes and other media stories) on the use of fly ash and at this point I'm not sure who to believe regarding the toxicity of fly ash in cementitious products. As long as the fly ash is locked up in the cement, I do not believe it is an issue, but what happens to the cement/mortar over time when it begins to degrade is anyone's guess.
Portland cement by itself has mercury and other trace elements that are not good. The question of whether fly ash is more or less toxic when compared to portland cement is murky. Since the subject of fly ash has become a political hot-button, I'm not sure who to believe.
The U.S. already uses fly ash with portland cement for roads and other cementitious products.
I like the idea of a close-to 100% recycled mortar, but I certainly do not want it to glow in the dark!
